This kind of magic combines several elements of arcana. One must be well versed in runes as well as the spoken incantations necessary for the ritual. Most of these spells require syllabic chants or incantations to activate the spell. Other components are required as conduits for the magic energy, many of which include: gems or gem dust, ink, chalk, feathers, bones, plants, and oils. Gems in particular are often ground down and added to oils and inks for transcribing spells. Some of the most common gem components and their uses include:
Rubies or Fire Opals--for spells involving fire
Sapphires--for spells involving water
Emeralds--for spells involving wind
Topaz--for spells involving earth
Hematite--for seeing in the dark and invisibility spells
Diamonds--for divination and teleportation magic. One of the most versatile gems, often used in higher level magic.
Obsidian--for dark magic. Necromantic magic often uses obsidian along with ash and bones.
Blue Obsidian--for powerful rituals due to its rarity and association with purity
Most commonly used in Solheim, wands are used as a conduit to channel the earth's natural energy. Wands are made from different types of wood which each hold their own unique magical qualities. They can also be strengthened by carving runic spells into them or by embellishing them with crystals or gems to boost one's abilities. Crystals and lachryma can be used to store magic for later use. Wand magic requires spoken incantations to perform spells. They are often singular words of power or short chants, unlike the longer incantations in runic and ritual spellcasting. Different wood types for wands include:
Alder--for bravery, self-confidence and spiritual growth. Believed to shield the astral self from unwanted intrusion.
Ash--for intelligence, wisdom, and curiosity. Believed to protect from unwanted change and bring balance to the mind.
Beech--for aspiration, desire, and victory. Believed to help with divination magic.
Birch--for rebirth, renewal, and diligence. Believed to aid in healing and protection magic.
Elder--for change and healing. Believed to aid in banishment magic.
Elm--for endurance and fertility. Believed to have strong connections with life and death.
Hawthorn--for insight, protection, and creativity.
Oak--for truth, knowledge, and protection. Believed to help center one's mind and assist in intuition and observation.
Willow--for rebirth and change. Believed to have a strong connection to life and death, used in divination magic.
Runes can be used in tandem with different magics but are not necessary for basic spellcasting. Many Johte'ir clans gravitate toward this type of magic as it draws from an object's true nature. Runic magic is performed through knowledge of the ancient Tashba language. These spells are spoken either in the Johte'ir or Tashba languages. Incantations must be spoken with deep rooted intent, giving the spell its power. For the most powerful outcome, the rune is traced with a conduit (such as chalk, ink infused with gem dust, or blood) while speaking the words aloud. Runic magic is also used in ritual spellcasting. Often times large spell circles are drawn with chalk or gem infused ink, the intricate runes written between the lines as the spell is spoken aloud.
